'MI Healthier Tomorrow' Campaign Targets Obesity With Help From Detroit Businesses

(LANSING, Mich.) -- A group of Detroit area businesses have come out in support of the "MI Healthier Tomorrow" campaign to combat obesity.

On Wednesday, the group -- which includes Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Compuware, Marketing Associates, and Quicken Loans -- announced their support for the campaign, which encourages residents to lose 10 percent of their body weight.

"We know we cannot do this alone so to see such strong partners take charge in improving the health of our state is absolutely invaluable," James K. Haveman, Director of the Michigan Department of Community Health, said in a statement.

Dinner's on George Clooney in Germany!

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Dinner's on George Clooney! One group of diners at the Grill Royal restaurant in Berlin?were treated to a free meal because the actor was worried that he and his friends at a nearby table were making too much noise, Clooney's representative has confirmed to TODAY.

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

According to English-language publication The Local, German newspaper Bild reported that Clooney and Co. weren't disturbing the others in any way.

"They had behaved in a very cultivated manner," one man in the group told the paper, "I was stunned."

According to The Local, the man never recognized Clooney, even when he stopped by the star's table to leave a business card in hopes he could repay the gesture some day.

The newspaper reported that the dinner bill was around 100 Euros, or $135 U.S.

It's far from Clooney's first generous gesture. Back in October, paparazzi captured a photo of the actor giving money to a man sitting on a New York street wearing military dog tags.

Clooney is in Germany to direct and star in "Monuments Men," an upcoming big-screen drama also starring Daniel Craig and Cate Blanchett. Based on Robert M. Edsel's book, the film is about a group of Allied art experts racing to save priceless artworks from destruction by the Nazis.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Super Bowl advertisers are learning the art of the tease.

Supermodel Kate Upton appears in an online Mercedes-Benz video in a low-cut top. An unknown man wakes up with his face covered in smeared lipstick and his hands bound in furry handcuffs in a Gildan Activewear clip. And "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan seemingly curses in a spot for Kraft's Mio flavored drops.

"Hey, can you say (bleep) on TV?" he asks in the spot titled "Bleep."

Super Bowl advertisers no longer are keeping spots a secret until the Big Game. They're releasing online snippets of their ads or longer video trailers that allude to the action in the Game Day spot.

It's an effort to squeeze more publicity out of advertising's biggest stage by creating pregame buzz. Advertisers are shelling out $4 million to get their 30-second spots in front of the 111 million viewers expected to tune into the game. But they're looking for ways to reach even more people: About half of the more than 30 super Bowl advertisers are expected to have teaser ads this year, up from 10 last year, according to Hulu, which aggregates Super Bowl ads on its AdZone Web site.

"It's a great way to pique people's interest," said Paul Chibe, chief marketing officer at Anheuser-Busch, which introduced snippets of one of its Super Bowl ads showing a woman in a shiny dress striding down a hallway with a beer. "If you create expectations before the game people will want to look for your ad in the telecast."

There's an art to teasers. Each spot, which can run from a few seconds to over a minute long, is intended to drive up hype by giving viewers clues about Game Day ads. But the key is to not give too much away. So marketers must walk a fine line between revealing too much ? or too little ? about their Super Bowl ads.

Taco Bell CEO Greg Creed said introducing a teaser helps people feel as if they're "in the know" about the company's Super Bowl ad before it airs. The company's teaser shows an elderly man, who is also the star of its Game Day ad, doing wheelies in a scooter on a football field.

"On game day, we want people to say, 'Shh, shh, shh. Here comes the ad,'" he says.

Some companies have been successful using Super Bowl teasers in the past. Last year, Volkswagen's teaser that showed dogs barking "The Imperial March" from the Star Wars movie was a hit. In fact, it was almost as popular as the Game Day ad, which had a Star Wars-themed twist ending. Both the teaser and the ad each received about 16 million views on YouTube.com.

But other spots fall flat, or worse, are all but been forgotten once the mystery is revealed during the Big Game. For instance, Bridgestone put out several teasers for its Super Bowl ad last year. But the Game Day ad itself did not show up the USA Today AdMeter, which ranks the popularity of ads.

"It makes sense that people would want to get more mileage out of their ads than just a single viewing on the Super Bowl because of the cost," said Barbara Lippert, columnist at mediapost.com. "But it's a big risk. It can have a big reward, too, but what usually happens is the spots just don't live up to the hype. The effect is amplified if you release it early."

To be sure, no matter how carefully marketers try to control pre-game buzz, sometimes it gets away from them. Volkswagen, following its past success with "The Imperial March," teaser, is facing some criticism this year.

On Monday, it released its Super Bowl ad showing a Minnesotan office worker who adopts a Jamaican accent because he's so happy with his car. Some online columnists called it culturally insensitive because it shows a white man adopting an accent associated with black Jamaicans.

Volkswagen said the accent is intended to convey a "relaxed cheerful demeanor."

Still, some ad experts say by releasing the ad early, Volkswagen might have spared itself backlash later. After all, now they have time to tinker with the spot before it airs.

"Even though it's not a good ad, they managed to get as much attention this year as they did last year before the game," Lippert, the ad critic, says. "It's amazing to use America as their test kitchen, which they did."

Sybil's Death On 'Downton Abbey' ? Will Cora & Robert Divorce ...

Cora Crawley is beyond right to blame her dolt of a husband, Robert, for the unnecessary death of Downton?s most beloved character.

Cora Crawley experienced an earth-shattering tragedy on last night, Jan. 27?s episode of?Downton Abbey. Just at a time that should have been full of happiness ? her daughter Sybil is expecting a baby and the family?s estate has been saved by Matthew Crawley?s inheritance ? there is an unexpected death and Robert is to blame!

Cora?s beautiful ?baby,? youngest daughter Sybil, who is just 24, dies minutes after childbirth due to a severe case of eclampsia. Now Cora is in agony experiencing what no parent ever should have to endure- the death of a child.

But what is particularly tearing apart Cora is that Sybil?s death could likely have been prevented.

Why Robert?s To Blame For Sybil?s Tragic Death

And the person most responsible for Sybil?s death was her own father and Cora?s husband ? Robert Crawley, Lord Grantham.

Despite Cora?s pleas to her husband to take Sybil immediately to the hospital for a Cesarian section which could have possibly saved her life ? Robert refuses.

Robert is so caught up in his upper crust snobbery that he refuses to listen to the advice from distressed, local Dr. Clarkson, who urgently warns the family that Sybil is suffering from dangerous toxemia during childbirth.

Dr. Clarkson has been pitted against some fancy doctor brought in from London by Robert ??Sir Philip Tapsell.

Sir Philip may look good in tails for dinner but he barely pays attention to Sybil who is in agony as she suffers in a difficult labor upstairs while the Crawleys and Sir Philip dine below.

Why Doesn?t Anyone Listen To Dr. Clarkson?

Meanwhile Dr. Clarkson points out first to Cora ? who is all ears ? and then to the rest of the Crawleys, that Sybil has all the classic symptoms of a dangerous state of toxemia, which can lead to deathly eclampsia.

Poor Sybil complains of excruciating headaches, has mental lapses from reality, and hallucinates that she is still nursing at a hospital. Dr. Clarkson points out that her ankles are swollen and that her baby appears to be on the small side.

I?ve checked out the symptoms of toxemia, which is a pregnancy complication affecting 2-6 percent of first-time mothers according to the American Pregnancy Association.

And just like Dr. Clarkson said ? Sybil had textbook symptoms of toxemia: headaches, fatigue, swelling in the feet and too much protein in her urine. All symptoms that Dr. Clarkson pointed out to fancy Sir Philip and to know-nothing Robert Crawley. The symptoms are caused by dangerously high blood pressure in the expectant mother.

Did Robert Crawley?s Pride Kill His Daughter?

But Robert, who naturally had so little medical knowledge that he didn?t even want the issue discussed in front of his mother, the Dowager, ignores Cora and Dr. Clarkson and refuses to allow Sybil to be moved to the hospital.

Robert doesn?t seem to understand that his daughter could die as the result of his refusal to listen to the country doctor.

Furthermore, he also leaves Sybil?s distraught husband?Thomas, the former chauffeur, out of the decision, even though he is obviously Sybil?s next of kin.

Instead, Robert overrules Cora and Dr. Clarkson?s pleas and insists that he won?t allow Sybil to be exposed to germs in a public hospital.

Obviously, his concerns about cleanliness are warranted ? this is the early ?20s before the era of antibiotics which made surgery safe.

But as Dr. Clarkson knew, toxemia would likely lead to the fatal eclampsia if Sybil didn?t get an immediate C-section and that would be a certain death sentence.

How Eclampsia Can Cause Death

Eclampsia results when toxemia (also called preeclampsia) isn?t treated quickly, causing liver or kidney failure and also massive bleeding, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

The reason that Sybil?s baby was small is because toxemia can prevent the placenta from getting enough blood, so the fetus gets less oxygen and food.

As Sybil?s condition quickly deteriorates and Dr. Clarkson and Sir Philip argue, Cora can barely contain herself, especially when Dr. Clarkson repeats that they must do a Cesarean before it is ?too late.?

The only thing that can save her is an immediate delivery of the baby which will relieve her high and escalating blood pressure.

He warns that once ?seizures? start, nothing can be done to prevent her death.

A Decision That Splits A Family

Cora, like any normal mother, owed her strongest allegiance to her child ? in this case Sybil. That bond overruled even her loyalty and deference to her longtime husband.

Her instincts told her to listen to Dr. Clarkson and save Sybil, while her husband placed his allegiance to a well-titled physician above the wishes of his wife.

His pig-heeled decision meant that the entire family witnessed the horror of Sybil?s agonizing death during a series of seizures.

Her death may NOT have been prevented if she ended up dying from complications of a C-section, but it was absolutely sealed by her father?s refusal to listen to his wife and the doctor who had known Sybil since she was born.

Cora is heartbroken and so haunted by the agony that Sybil?s death may have been prevented that she can?t bear to sleep with Robert, or to barely even be with him in the same room.

And Cora is right. What Robert did IS unforgivable! He #1) didn?t take the risk to Sybil?s life seriously, #2) didn?t put his wife?s urgent concerns over his deference to a titled doctor and #3) didn?t inform Sybil?s husband Tom about the options for her treatment.

Tom of course, when he found out that there was a chance to save Sybil, wanted her rushed to the hospital immediately ? but it was too late!

Where Can Cora Go From Here?

Robert?s role in Sybil?s death is unforgivable. And if Cora does force herself to go through the charade of forgiving him, she?ll never be able to forgive herself.

Living that lie would eat away at Cora for the rest of her life.

As a mother, Cora must stay true to her daughter and act in the best interests of her baby granddaughter and son-in-law, Tom.

That?s the only thing she can do to honor Sybil?s last wishes.

What do you think,?HollywoodLifers?? should Cora forgive Robert for Sybil?s death or not? Let me know!

??Bonnie Fuller

(AP) ? Tiger Woods was so good for so long at Torrey Pines that it didn't matter how bad it looked at the end.

In a finish that was fitting for such a long and exasperating week, Woods built an eight-shot lead with five holes to play on Monday until he lost patience with the slow play and started losing shots that only determined the margin of victory.

Despite two bogeys and a double bogey in the final hour, he closed with an even-par 72 for a four-shot victory in the Farmers Insurance Open.

"I'm excited the way I played all week," Woods said. "I hit the ball well ? pretty much did everything well and built myself a nice little cushion. I had some mistakes at the end, but all my good play before that allowed me to afford those mistakes."

He won for the 75th time in his PGA Tour career, seven behind the record held by Sam Snead.

Woods won this tournament for the seventh time, and he set a PGA Tour record by winning at Torrey Pines for the eighth time, including his 2008 U.S. Open. Woods also has won seven times at Bay Hill and at Firestone.

Torrey Pines is a public course that he has turned into his private domain.

"I don't know if anybody would have beaten him this week," said Nick Watney, who got within five shots of Woods when the tournament was still undecided until making three bogeys on his next five holes. "He's definitely on his game."

It was the 23rd time Woods has won by at least four shots on the PGA Tour. Defending champion Brandt Snedeker (69) and Josh Teater (69) tied for the second. Watney had a 71 and tied for fourth with Jimmy Walker.

It was a strong statement for Woods, who was coming off a missed cut last week in Abu Dhabi. This was the second time in his career that Woods won in his next tournament after missing the cut, but this was the first time it happened the following week.

Abu Dhabi is now a distant memory. The question how is what kind of season is shaping up for Woods.

"I think he wanted to send a message," said Hunter Mahan, who shares a swing coach with Woods. "I think deep down he did. You play some games to try to motivate yourself. There's been so much talk about Rory (McIlroy). Rory is now with Nike. That would be my guess."

The last time Woods won at Torrey Pines also was on a Monday, when he beat Rocco Mediate in a playoff to capture the U.S. Open for his 14th major.

Of all his wins on this course along the Pacific, this might have been the most peculiar.

Thick fog cost the tournament an entire day of golf on Saturday, forcing the first Monday finish in tournament history. Woods effectively won the tournament during his 25 holes on Sunday, when he turned a two-shot lead into a six-shot margin with only 11 holes to play. CBS Sports wanted to televise the final day in late afternoon on the East Coast, but it still went long because of the pace of play.

It took Woods about 3 hours, 45 minutes to finish his 11 holes on Monday. His 19-hole win over Mediate lasted 4? hours.

As much as Woods got off to a good start, equal attention was given to slow play, an increasing problem on the PGA Tour.

"It got a little ugly toward the end," Woods said. "I started losing patience a little bit with the slow play. I lost my concentration a little bit."

He made bogey from the bunker on No. 14. He hooked a tee shot off the eucalyptus trees and into a patch of ice plant on the 15th, leading to double bogey. After another long wait on the 17th tee, he popped up his tee shot and made another bogey. With a four-shot lead on the 18th ? Kyle Stanley blew a three-shot lead a year ago ? he hit wedge safely behind the hole for a two-putt par.

Woods finished on 14-under 274 for his 14th win in California, and 11th in San Diego County.

"I think a win always makes it special, especially the way I played," Woods said. "To have not won would have been something else because I really played well. Playing the way I did for most of this tournament, until the very end, the last five holes, I felt like I should have won this tournament. I put myself in a position where I had a big enough lead, and that's basically how I felt like I played this week.

"I know I can do that, and it was nice to be able to do it."

Like so many of his big wins, the only drama was for second place.

Brad Fritsch, the rookie from Canada, birdied his last two holes for a 75. That put him into a tie for ninth, however, making him eligible for the Phoenix Open next week. Fritsch had been entered in the Monday qualifier that he had to abandon when the Farmers Insurance Open lost Saturday to a fog delay.

Woods was so far ahead that he would have had to collapse for anyone to have a chance, and that never looked possible.

Even so, the red shirt seemed to put him on edge. It didn't help that as he settled over his tee shot on the par-5 ninth, he backed off when he heard a man behind the ropes take his picture.

Woods rarely hits the fairway after an encounter with a camera shutter, and this was no different ? it went so far right that it landed on the other side of a fence enclosing a corporate hospitality area.

Woods took his free drop, punched out below the trees into the fairway and then showed more irritation when his wedge nicked the flag after one hop and spun down the slope 30 feet away instead of stopping next to the hole.

He didn't show much reaction on perhaps his most memorable shot of the day ? with his legs near the edge of a bunker some 75 feet to the left of the 11th green, he blasted out to the top shelf and watched the ball take dead aim until it stopped a foot short. A two-putt birdie on the 13th gave him an eight-shot lead, and then it was only a matter of time ? a lot of time ? until the trophy presentation.

Before anyone projects a monster year for Woods based on one week, especially when that week is at Torrey Pines, remember that no one else in golf ? not even McIlroy ? is the subject of more snap judgments.

Woods, however, likes the direction he is headed, especially with his short game.

"I'm excited about this year. I'm excited about what I'm doing with Sean (Foley) and some of the things that I've built," he said. "This is a nice way to start the year."

Woods is not likely to return to golf until the Match Play Championship next month.

7 Triggers for Psychological Optimization of Websites | Internet ...

Do you know WHY your website needs to be psychologically optimized? When we optimize for psychology, sales go up, interaction & retention are enhanced and return visitors increase. If you?re doing e-commerce then you need every opportunity to increase your online sales. If your website is informational, you need people to remember you as a reference. If your website?s purpose is for education it?s important to stimulate the mind of the critical thinker.

When considering the psychology of your website, consider your purpose. There is no ?one size fits all? approach.

So let?s break website psychology down.

Color Psychology

Colors affect every decision we make, whether we know it or not. How we perceive a product, person or place is directly associated with the colors involved. Consciously or sub-consciously, colors play a role in our decisions. Colors effect our mood ? have you ever walked into a room that was dark and uncomfortable? It makes you want to leave immediately. This holds true with your website as well. If a visitor doesn?t feel comfortable, they will leave.

So it?s easy, you just have to find which colors mean what and put them in the design, Right? Not that easy?

Let?s use Orange as an example. Orange encourages ambition, fun times and warm energy, but when applied as a sales tool it makes products more attractive and look more affordable. If you have a call to action in Orange it will seem much more affordable and inviting then a call to action in Gold, which represents worth, loyalty and prestige. (Unless that?s what you?re going for)

All to often is the wrong color chosen for a web site. A color should be decided on based upon two key starting points. 1. Your target demographic 2. Your product/service.
If you have an existing logo, the color of the logo must be taken into consideration. The existing color must be incorporated with the correct density in the design, while still maintaining a balance with corresponding colors. (Which is another consideration you must address).

Color psychology is powerful when done correctly. It?s not an accident that Campbell?s soup has used the same colors continuously throughout their products life. I even bet when I mentioned that product you had a visual of the label pop up in you mind.

What about Coke, Pepsi, Google, 7UP, Nike, RedBull, Reese?s. These colors all play a role in how we perceive them.

So, once we have the colors, now what? What triggers us?

Psychological Triggers

We develop a Psycho-graphic profile which allows us to choose the color schemes. Psychological triggers, on the other hand, are used when developing our sales funnels in which we want those profiles to follow. It works both consciously or subconsciously, the proper use and placement of triggers will lead a customer through your website to the point of purchase.

If you recall the beginning of this document, I asked you ?Why does your website need to be psychologically optimized?? Do you know why I asked you that? Because humans are curious by nature. Asking ?why? stirs our curiosity stick so we delve deeper into a sites content. Searching for the answer.

?

The top 7 Psychological Triggers we can use are:

  1. BE SPECIFIC ? It?s important to be as specific as possible. Why? Because it makes your information more believable and credible.
  2. CURIOSITY ? We use this to lure viewers into content. It?s helps them discover the answer through their own efforts, even though we are not hiding anything from them to begin with.
  3. REASON WHY ? Why should people listen to you? Why should consumers buy from you? Why is what you?re offering going to make their life better?
  4. SCARCITY ? Simply put: we are more driven by the thought of
loosing something then by the thought of gaining something. ?Limited time offer?, ?Limited chances to win?, ?Buy before 4:00pm and win a fancy hat?
  5. FEAR ? Fear is a powerful trigger and controls the majority of our actions. The fear of Y2K had people frantically storing food, finding shelter and preparing for the end of the world.
  6. ENTHUSIASM ? Having positive energy when selling your product/service makes all the difference in the world. No one buys from a dull depressed pitch. The transfer of energy is crucial for consumers to believe in what they are committing to.
  7. TELLING THE TRUTH ? Sincere honesty gains you respect and credibility. All lies surface in time, but the truth will give you a concrete foundation that builds a relationship. People appreciate honesty, even when it?s not in their favor.
  8. Psychological optimization is just another key component that plays into the overall efforts put into web development. These tiny, yet large, decisions can mean the difference between profits and losses. We approach every website with these factors in mind. We go through the necessary research to properly evaluate who is visiting the site and how they will navigate through the site to arrive at a call to action. Each website is approached differently depending on it?s unique needs and how they pertain to the visitors.

Budget crisis: five ways the parties increasingly disagree

Republicans and Democrats are setting out fiscal goals that are light-years apart, Gleckman writes. Here are five stumbling blocks to a budget deal:

By Howard Gleckman,?Guest blogger / January 24, 2013

The American flag flies over the Rayburn House Office Building, at the U.S. Capitol, in Washington. It is hard to see how dueling measures will get us any closer to a long-term budget plan, Gleckman writes.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans have agreed to put off the next budget crisis for a month or so. This is a good thing, especially considering the alternative. And they?ll try to write a budget through the formal legislative process rather than starting with high-level negotiations with the White House. This is euphemistically known as regular order though it is hardly regular (it has not been used since the George W. Bush Administration) and there is nothing orderly about it.

The trouble is, Republicans and Democrats are setting out fiscal goals that are light-years apart. ?Maybe these are merely opening bids. But without huge concessions, budget talks will be futile. Here are five stumbling blocks to a deal: ??

The Next Crisis. While the House GOP agreed to delay the battle over the debt limit until summer, it will try to use two ?March deadlines?a package of automatic across-the-board spending cuts and a looming government shutdown? as leverage to slash government . ?Democrats prefer March?s automatic spending cuts to the even deeper reductions Republicans are aiming for.?

Illinois workers' compensation - don't give a recorded statement

A reader asks:

I fell on a tarp that was covering carpet at my office. It was there for construction and as I fell I grabbed the railing and felt a terrible pain in my shoulder. My doctor thinks that I tore my rotator cuff and wants me to get a MRI. The insurance adjuster told me that she will not authorize any treatment until I give a recorded statement about what happened. Should I do this?

The answer is always NO. Even in a case like this where the injured worker is clearly hurt on the job, recorded statements exist for only one reason. It gives an insurance adjuster a chance to twist your words against you. Insurance companies make money by not paying out claims that they should pay out. So in a case like this, if the adjuster can get the worker to state that they really aren?t 100% sure why they fell, that would be enough to deny the claim and potentially save the insurance company tens of thousands in medical bills they don?t have to pay.

In a case like this, we call the insurance adjusters and tell them that our client will not be giving a recorded statement. We will answer any questions the adjuster has. Anything we say can not be used as evidence. Anything you say, even if it gets twisted, can be used against you in an arbitration hearing or to deny your benefits.

No one would assume that an insurance company has bad intentions by asking what happened in the accident (or maybe they would assume that), but there is no reason they take these statements other than to try to come up with a reason to deny you.

So don?t talk. It can?t help you, even if you are honest. And remember, your benefits can?t legally be denied for not talking and if they are denied there are things we can do to turn the case around while still protecting your rights.

We are workers' compensation attorneys who help people with Illinois work injuries anywhere in IL via our statewide network of attorneys.?Contact us?and we will answer your questions or find the right lawyer for your situation.

American Horror Story, Season 2

1359143497381

Jessica Lange as Sister Jude.?

FX

In this week?s finale episode of American Horror Story: Asylum, we learned that Lana Winter?s ticket to fame was not her journalistic writing, as she had originally planned, but her skill brandishing a microphone on camera. After exposing the decrepitude of Briarcliff in prime time to much acclaim, Lana became the host of a ?gotcha? news magazine show called America Unmasked. It?s almost too perfect, that show title: Transpose that kind of probing to the darker elements of American mythology, and you?ve got an ideal tagline for AHS in general.

Lana said in her Kennedy Center Honors interview that she wanted ?to take America inside the asylum??exactly what AHS helmsmen Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk did this season. Except that in their narrative sanitarium, the cells don?t just house ?visually stimulating? crazy people; the truly scary things living here?stuffed under the mattress next to Shelley?s cucumber, perhaps?are far less ?entertaining? and far more uncomfortably familiar. They are the creaks and groans that haunt our collective American dream.

Given the admittedly exhausting buildup of storylines and characters we saw in the middle of this season, it?s easy to forget some of the real horrors that AHS critiqued. For starters, take the racism invoked by the response to Kit and Alma?s union, or the chillingly nonchalant homophobia directed towards Lana and Wendy. But those monsters seem almost cuddly when compared to the portrait of America?s atrocious relationship with mental illness that the show so graphically presents, and which has recently been highlighted by discussions surrounding the Newtown shootings. True, institutions like Briarcliff Manor have mostly been shuttered over the past half-century, but our struggle to treat mentally ill people as worthy, nuanced human beings lives on, even if under a more politically correct veneer. Don?t forget: After 13 episodes of exploitative, sometimes nauseating images of human misery, we were left with no clear salvation for the residents of Briarcliff who supposedly ?deserved? to be there. They simply disappeared, and any pleasure we took in those images should be on our consciences; though I doubt that few even thought, like Jen Chaney did in our chat, of their fates. I know I didn?t.

If this sounds a little preachy, forgive me. I?m only trying to counter the prevailing opinion that American Horror Story is just a madcap entertainment with a void at its core. Quite the contrary: If taken seriously (which, admittedly, Murphy and co. sometimes make difficult), it seems to me to be one of the most ethically weighty shows on television. Both seasons thus far have encouraged?at times even demanded?that we ask awkward questions about specters that haunt the American landscape: school shootings, women?s reproductive rights, treatment of the mentally ill?the list goes on. And it?s probably no accident that both seasons have featured a protagonist whose profession?an investigative reporter and a psychiatrist?involves digging below the surface of things, often finding something unsavory (as Lana literally did in the finale) underneath. Taking AHS for nothing more than a creepy romp is the laziest way to engage with it; remove that mask (or that skin, if you like) and things get richer and a heck of a lot more complicated.?

In the end, though, American Horror Story does not seem terribly interested in answering the questions it raises within its fundamentally dark view of American life. We could take this as simply disturbing, or we could go further and wonder whether those questions have answers at all. But either way, AHS has done its mirror-wielding work. Sister Jude said it best: "If you look in the face of evil, evil?s gonna look right back at you."

Preparing To Buy A Home

Preparing to buy a home is a bit like preparing to go on a very long journey. You have to have your finances in order, know where you're going, what you're hoping to accomplish and how much time and how much money you can afford to spend.

Financial matters. When it comes to owning real estate nothing is more important, for obvious reasons. As we've seen, if you get locked into a mortgage you can't afford, the result can be devastating. But even if you can afford the mortgage, you might not want to be "house rich and cash poor". You have to consider other things that are important to you such as travel and your spending habits. If for instance, you like to travel for months at a time, it might be wise to consider a smaller house with a less expensive mortgage instead of a large home with a big mortgage, which could cause you more work and less financial ability to spend on other things you like.

Another consideration is the length of time you want to have the mortgage. Many young people choose a 30-year fixed mortgage but if you're a senior citizen you might want to opt for a 15-year loan. The best thing you can do is make a list of your financial matters and the questions you have about buying a home and then consult with a highly experienced loan officer. A knowledgeable loan officer can be like having a tour guide with you all the time in a foreign country where you don't speak the language. The jargon used in the mortgage industry documents can be confusing. Having someone who can clearly explain the documents, what to expect, the time frame, and the process is priceless.

Debt-to-income. The ratio of your debt-to-income is vital when purchasing a home. These guidelines have become more strict since the housing crisis so it's critical to consult with experts about your personal financial situation. Generally speaking, you should have a debt-to-income ratio of no more that 36 percent?meaning all you owe (including your mortgage, taxes, and insurance) should not equal more than 36 percent of your income. Remember there are still monthly expenses of your home on top of your debt. And, of course, the less you owe and the more you make, the better position you're in for buying a home and creating your own financial freedom.

These days, along with keeping your expenses and debt manageable, a key factor to buying a home is having a healthy downpayment. Most lenders would consider 20 percent a good downpayment. The more you bring in, the less you have to borrow. Remember the collapse of the housing market was brought on by small or no downpayment loans and many buyers who simply didn't understand the risks.

Know how long you'll stay. This is really important because the cost of buying and selling a home is expensive and very time-consuming. If you're not planning on staying in your home more than seven to ten years, think about renting. You may still decide to buy, but you need to understand the cost of purchasing and maintaining a home. Investigate the economic difference between buying and renting. Be realistic about how frequently you've moved in the past and whether you're now ready to settle in for several years. You can always rent your home out but this assumes that you'll be a landlord (willing to take on all those duties) and then also have to find another place to live and either rent or buy.

After considering all of these factors and making certain that you're ready to buy, then take the next step and find the best agent in your real estate market. Your agent will help you further prepare to buy the home of your dreams.

Israeli PM Netanyahu scrambles to keep his job

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A weakened Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scrambled Wednesday to keep his job by extending his hand to a new centrist party that advocates a more earnest push on peacemaking with the Palestinians and whose surprisingly strong showing broadsided him with a stunning election deadlock.

The results defied forecasts that Israel's next government would veer sharply to the right at a time when the country faces mounting international isolation, growing economic problems and regional turbulence. While that opens the door to unexpected movement on peace efforts, a coalition joining parties with dramatically divergent views on peacemaking, the economy and the military draft could just as easily be headed for gridlock ? and perhaps a short life.

With nearly all votes counted, Netanyahu's hawkish bloc and rival centrists and leftists each commanded 60 of parliament's 120 seats. Netanyahu, who called early elections three months ago expecting easy victory, is likely to be tapped to form the next government because his Likud-Yisrael Beitenu alliance is the largest single bloc in parliament, while his rivals include 12 seats from Arab parties that are traditionally excluded from coalition building.

Netanyahu said the election outcome proved "the Israeli public wants me to continue leading the country" and put together "as broad a coalition as possible" to achieve three major domestic policy goals: bring ultra-Orthodox Jewish men into the military, provide affordable housing and change the system of government, now hostage to a fragmented multiparty system that often gives smaller coalition partners outsize strength.

He later alluded to peacemaking, but only obliquely so, when he added that coalition talks would also focus on "security and diplomatic responsibility." He took no questions from reporters and strode immediately out of the room after delivering his statement.

His remarks seemed to be an overture to political newcomer Yesh Atid, or There is a Future, party, which turned pre-election forecasts on their heads and dealt Netanyahu such a sharp political blow.

Yesh Atid's leader, Yair Lapid, has said he would only join a government committed to sweeping economic changes and an overhaul of the system of government. He also called for a serious effort to resume stalled peace talks with the Palestinians, but his main focus is on economic and social issues.

The results were not official, and the final bloc breakdowns could shift before the central elections committee finishes its tally early Thursday. With the blocs so evenly divided, there remains a remote possibility that Netanyahu would not form the next government, even though both he and Lapid have called for the creation of a broad coalition.

Under Israel's parliamentary system, voters cast ballots for parties, not individual candidates. Because no party throughout Israel's 64-year history has ever won an outright majority of parliamentary seats, the country has always been governed by coalitions. Traditionally, the party that wins the largest number of seats is given the first chance to form a governing alliance. President Shimon Peres has until mid-February to set that process in motion, though he could begin earlier.

Netanyahu's Likud-Yisrael Beitenu alliance polled strongest in Tuesday's election, winning 31 parliamentary seats. But that is still 11 fewer than the 42 it held in the outgoing parliament and below the forecasts of 32 to 37 in recent polls. Yesh Atid had been projected to capture about a dozen seats but won 19, making it the second-largest in the legislature.

The goal of a broad coalition will not be an easy one, however, and will force Netanyahu to make some difficult decisions. In an interview last week with The Associated Press, Lapid said he would not be a "fig leaf" for a hard-line agenda on peacemaking. A leading party member, Yaakov Peri, said Wednesday that Yesh Atid will not join unless the government pledges to begin drafting the ultra-Orthodox into the military, lowers the country's high cost of living and returns to peace talks.

"We have red lines. We won't cross those red lines, even if it will cost us sitting in the opposition," Peri told Channel 2 TV.

That stance could force Netanyahu to promise overtures ? perhaps far more sweeping than he imagined ? to get peace negotiations moving again. But a harder line taken by traditional and future hawkish allies could present formidable obstacles to coalition building.

Experience also shows that promises made during coalition negotiations do not always pan out. Yesh Atid has not yet spelled out specific conditions it would set down on this issue.

The election results surprised Israelis, given the steady stream of recent opinion polls forecasting a solid hard-line majority and a weaker showing by centrists. Netanyahu may have suffered because of his close ties to the ultra-Orthodox and perhaps from complacency. Many voters chose smaller parties, believing a Netanyahu victory was assured.

Statistician Camil Fuchs, who conducts polls for Israeli media, said previously undecided voters threw their support to Lapid in large numbers. Pollster Mina Zemah said support surged for Lapid in the last few days of the campaign, and he drew about 50 percent of his support from the right.

Lapid said the election outcome reflected a longing for unity in a country beset by schisms.

"The citizens of Israel today said no to politics of fear and hatred. They said no to the possibility that we might splinter off into sectors, and groups and tribes and narrow interest groups. They said no to extremists, and they said no to anti-democratic behavior," he said.

Tensions with the United States, Israel's most important ally, also may have factored into the shift to Lapid. President Barack Obama was quoted last week as saying that Netanyahu was undermining Israel's own interests by continuing to build Jewish settlements on occupied lands the Palestinians want for a future state.

Netanyahu has won praise at home for drawing the world's attention to Iran's suspect nuclear program and for keeping the economy on solid ground at a time of global turmoil. But he has repeatedly clashed with international allies over his handling of the peace process, which has stalled over the issue of Israel construction in Jewish settlements in the war-won West Bank and east Jerusalem.
