Tweet This Joplin, MO -- August 30th, 2012, The real estate rebound and surge in demand for quality Missouri general contractor services seem perfectly timed to coincide with the makeover of one of the area's leading construction firm's websites. The latest National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) survey this August reveals home builder confidence rising to a new 5 year high, a level we haven't seen since the market went bust in 2007.

Joplin, MO is definitely riding the new real estate wave with the local median home price up 10 percent year-over-year according to data compiler Trulia, while the region continues to boast one of the lowest foreclosure rates in the nation. In fact RealtyTrac reports just 1 in every 32,684 homes in Joplin received a notice in July 2012, beating out the state average of 1 in 1,166, while other states see foreclosures hitting one in every 300. Recent market factors have increased the demand for home remodeling, renovation projects and custom new construction.

However, as with the rest of the real estate industry there has been a big shake up in general contractor services and it can be difficult to find an established and reliable construction firm that can be counted on today. Fortunately for those in Joplin there is one Missouri construction firm which sticks out. While others have abandoned the business during the slump or took years off, Mike Treaster has maintained a reputation as one of Hannibal and Joplin's general contractors who can be counted on.

Mike understands the hard times many MO residents have been through and appreciates what it takes to run a company through tighter times. He loves telling of how he bootstrapped his new business back in 1998 to get it off the ground and build it to where it is today. Mike's motto of "give the customer the best job, with a solid guarantee and you have a customer for life" seems to have served his construction company well. Today Mike's Construction provides full service contracting services for both commercial and residential projects including remodeling, custom building, roofing, excavation, concrete construction and more.

In addition to being considered one of the best Joplin Missouri construction website of 2012 Mike's Construction holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, is an EPA certified renovation firm, is a member of the National Roofing Contractors Association and is of course licensed and insured. The company is open 7 days a week and that require general contractor assistance or who are contemplating construction or renovation work can request free estimates via the revamped website at http://www.mikesconstructionllc.com, or Calling Mike directly at 888-231-6804.

Will Internet TV and YouTube Change the Viewing World as We ...

by Carl Weiss

When it comes to the Internet, there are a number of sites and technologies that have truly been game changers. When Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.com in 1994, he started an etail revolution that would eventually put the fear of God into brick and mortar retailers. In 1995 eBay was founded, which would change the face of auctioning forever. Then on September 4 of the following year, a pair of enterprising Stanford University students named Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google, the search engine that would later go onto dominate web search.

Along the way, technologies came and went. Online empires (such as Netscape) rose and fell. It wasn?t until February of 2005 that three former PayPal employees named Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim started YouTube.com. A little more than a year later, on October 9, 2006, it was announced that the company would be purchased by Google for $1.65 billion in stock. And the rest is history.

Just to give you some idea of the lightning fast growth of YouTube, you have to keep in mind that from the start, the video portal was one of the fastest growing sites online. Even though it had started less than a year before, by the summer of 2006,?YouTube was already ranked by Alexa as the Internet?s 5th most visited website. According to a July 16, 2006 survey, 100 million video clips were already being viewed daily on YouTube, with an additional 65,000 new videos being uploaded every 24 hours. This was the same year that Time Magazine featured a YouTube screen with a large mirror as its annual ?Person of the Year.? By May 2011, YouTube reported in its company blog that the site was receiving more than three billion views per day. In January 2012, YouTube stated that the figure had increased to four billion videos streamed per day.

4 Billion Viewers Can?t All Be Wrong

One of the reasons that YouTube has garnered so many viewers is due to the fact that not only is it owned and operated by the world?s most visited search engine (Google), but it has also created a number of strategic alliances with broadcast, mobile and gaming companies.

YouTube entered into a marketing and advertising partnership with NBC in June 2006. In November 2008, YouTube reached an agreement with MGM, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS, allowing the companies to post full-length films and television episodes on the site. A TiVo service update in July 2008 allowed the system to search and play YouTube videos. In January 2009, YouTube launched ?YouTube for TV,? a version of the website tailored for set-top boxes and other TV-based media devices with web browsers, initially allowing its videos to be viewed on the PlayStation 3 and Wii video game consoles. Some smartphones are capable of accessing YouTube videos, dependent on the provider and the data plan. YouTube Mobile was launched in June 2007, using RTSP streaming for the video.

What this has done is made YouTube the most watched TV station on the planet. Better still, it is the world?s most democratic TV station, since all programming is on-demand, with viewership solely at the discretion of the public. Best of all, for programmers, this is one Super Station that is free of charge. Anyone with a video can set up an account and begin streaming content without charge of any kind. What started off as a repository for shaky camera work and stupid cat tricks has evolved into a place where fledgling TV producers, wanna be TV moguls and savvy entrepreneurs can create, grow and interact with an almost limitless audience.

That in itself has spawned a flurry of web series, some created by professionals and others started by rank amateurs. Of the latter, a number of series created by the public have created something of a cult following. Some of the top producing series tout millions of viewers per week and compete head on with network fare.

So how does this rock your world? More importantly, how does it relate to building your business online? In the first place, YouTube videos are a great way to promote your business and your products to the masses. It?s a proven fact that people online would rather be shown than told about most any subject. It?s also a proven fact that people are 5 times as likely to click on a video as a website. SEO aside, with a little imagination and follow through, Web TV could be a game changing way to promote your business.

You Don?t Have to Wait for Hollywood to Come Calling

Currently the public clearly has an insatiable appetite for video, whether online or on TV. While it is a real boon for those lucky few business people who have been deemed worthy of the attention of cable TV, in reality you don?t have to wait for Hollywood to come knocking at your door. With a little bit of creativity and staying power, it is now possible for individuals and businesses to create and broadcast their own reality shows, talk shows, and variety shows that can be used to leverage huge audiences.

All you have to do to take advantage of this opportunity is answer this simple question: ?What do I do in my business that would be of interest to the public??

New DNA method tracks fish and whales in seawater

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Danish researchers at University of Copenhagen lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity and resources by using DNA traces in seawater samples to keep track of fish and whales in the oceans. A half litre of seawater can contain evidence of local fish and whale faunas and combat traditional fishing methods. Their results are now published in the international scientific journal PLOS ONE.

"The new DNA-method means that we can keep better track of life beneath the surface of the oceans around the world, and better monitor and protect ocean biodiversity and resources," says PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen from the Centre for GeoGenetics, Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.

Marine ecosystems worldwide are under threat with many fish species and populations suffering from human over-exploitation, which greatly impacts global biodiversity, economy and human health. Today, marine fish are largely surveyed using selective and invasive methods mostly limited to commercial species, and restricted to areas with favourable conditions.

However, researchers at Centre for GeoGenetics now lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity. They have shown that seawater contains DNA from animals such as fish and whales. The species leave behind a trace of DNA that reveals their presence in the ocean based on water samples of just half a litre.

From freshwater to seawater

The development of the novel DNA monitoring approach was accomplished by PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen and Master's student Jos Kielgast from the Centre for GeoGenetics headed by Professor Eske Willerslev. In December last year, they showed that small freshwater samples contain DNA from several different threatened animals, and after having published these results they began to focus on seawater. Here it also proved possible to obtain DNA directly from the water, which originated from local species living in the area.

"We analysed seawater samples specifically for fish DNA and we were very surprised when the results started to show up on the screen. We ended up with DNA from 15 different fish species in water samples of just a half litre. We found DNA from both small and large fish, as well as both common species and rare guests. Cod, herring, eel, plaice, pilchard and many more have all left a DNA trace in the seawater," says Philip Francis Thomsen.

In the other study the researchers showed that it is also possible to obtain DNA from harbour porpoise in small water samples taken in the sea, so the approach is not only limited to fish, but can also track large marine mammals.

A new and efficient method

The study also compares the new DNA method with existing methods traditionally used for monitoring fish such as trawl and pots. Here, the DNA method proved as good as or mostly better than existing methods. Moreover, the DNA method has a big advantage that it can be performed virtually anywhere without impacting the local habitat -- it just requires a sample of water. Associate Professor and fish expert Peter Rask M?ller from the National History Museum of Denmark, who also participated in the study, is optimistic.

"The new DNA method has very interesting perspectives for monitoring marine fish. We always keep our eyes open for new methods to describe marine fish biodiversity in an efficient and standardised way. Here, I look very much forward to follow the DNA method in the future, and I think it could be very useful to employ in oceans around the world," says Peter Rask M?ller.

The researchers also see great perspectives in the method for estimating fish stocks in the future.

With choreographed conventions, is something lost?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Chris Christie's moment at the microphone neared, delegates to the Republican National Convention were atwitter at the chance to hear the New Jersey governor speak. After all, who knew what might happen? "He doesn't seem to have a filter," said David Shimkin, a delegate from New York.

But the famously freewheeling Christie did in fact have filters: He used a teleprompter, and he read from a speech that has been vetted and approved.

Americans hunger for authenticity ? or, at least, say that they do. The explosion of reality TV is testament to that desire for the unscripted moment (even if that unscripted moment is, well, scripted). So the slick choreography of the modern political convention, while understandable, also seems odd. And, some say, it's actually counterproductive to what the parties say they want to accomplish: generate passion that translates into votes.

"This regard for order, this insistence on order, it's just weird," says Richard Bensel, a professor of American politics at Cornell University.

It's that need to control the message and the messengers that led Texas Congressman Ron Paul to hold his own alternative rally Sunday in Tampa, Fla., drawing a crowd of thousands. "It's exactly what the Republican Party should have wanted ? real spirit, real emotion," Bensel says. "That enthusiasm shouldn't be offstage. It shouldn't be in an independent rally."

But it's the way things work these days. And Robert Lehrman, who was Vice President Al Gore's chief speech writer for three years, says that if he were GOP nominee Mitt Romney, he would insist on an orderly convention.

"You're trying to show a unified, strong party that represents your views," says Lehrman, author of the 2009 book "The Political Speechwriter's Companion." ''And to have those kinds of debates doesn't help the campaign."

"Used to be 30 years ago, you had platform fights, and they would come from the floor and be debated," he says. "Now, they had some platform stuff on CSPAN, where 30,000 people watch it. But 30 million people have no idea about those things."

In the 19th century, the candidates mostly avoided the conventions altogether. In 1860, Lincoln stayed home in Springfield and his supporters did the work. To do otherwise, Lehrman says, "was considered immodest."

Harry Truman was such a terrible speaker that his aides, at the 1948 Democratic convention, decided to give him a list of talking points instead of a speech. To make things worse, just as he reached the stage, a woman rushed up with a cage full of "doves of peace" ? which promptly got loose and, as one aide would later write, "did what pigeons do." The speech went on to be one of Truman's more memorable, but it's hard to forget the pigeons.

There was a time when a rousing convention speech could make history. William Jennings Bryan was a little-known former Nebraska congressman when he arrived in Chicago for the 1896 Democratic National Convention to make a speech in favor of the free-silver movement. Most newspapers covering the event listed him sixth or lower ? if at all.

"He was technically a candidate, but in the way, say, Ron Paul is. Even less than that, actually," says Bensel, author of "Passion and Preferences: William Jennings Bryan and the 1896 Democratic Convention." But after Bryan delivered his now legendary "Cross of Gold" speech, he walked away with the party's nomination ? and a place in the history books.

Sociologist and essayist John Shelton Reed understands that the Republicans don't want another "Pat Buchanan moment" ? the former presidential candidate's infamous "culture war" speech at the 1992 GOP convention in Houston.

"There is a religious war going on in this country," Buchanan thundered from the podium. "It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we shall be as the Cold War itself. For this war is for the soul of America. And in that struggle for the soul of America, Clinton and Clinton are on the other side, and George Bush is on our side."

"Everybody seemed to agree that was not helpful," Reed says. "They didn't check it in advance, I'm pretty sure."

Christie is famous for speaking bluntly and loudly. But he understands that Tampa is not the place for winging it. In an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Christie acknowledged as much. "I don't use text almost ever," he said. "So most of the time I think about what it is I want to talk about, and then I get up there and I talk about it."

Given the venue and the time restrictions, Christie said, "they want you to work off a text, and that's fine." But he noted that former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour reminded him that he needed to "be Chris.'"

"If that means I stray a little off the prompter every once in a while," he said, "that's the way it goes."

Christie did not stray much, except to add emphasis or focus his audience. And while he did seem a tad less spontaneous than usual, his delivery ? "I know this simple truth and I'm not afraid to say it" ? was every bit as powerful.

It's that delicate balance ? preparation without overpackaging ? that is so difficult to strike. Rick Andrews, who teaches improv at New York's Magnet Theater, works with businesspeople trying to communicate better. The trick for politicians, he says, is to try to "appear casual, off the cuff ? when you're not."

"We would be shocked if they weren't prepared," Andrews says. "But we also don't want them to appear to be overly prepared."

Republicans, including Romney, have openly mocked President Barack Obama's use of the teleprompter. But Ann Romney, the former Massachusetts governor's wife, seemed relieved to know she would not be up on that stage alone. She told reporters Tuesday that she had "never gone off of a written text."

"I had a lot of input in this, I must say, and a lot of, um, tweaking where I felt like was getting what I really wanted to say and from my heart," she said.

Whatever butterflies she might have had going in, they had flown soon after she took the stage. She even went off script at regular intervals, channeling Oprah Winfrey after a passage about mothers, wives, sisters and daughters: "I love you women, and I hear your voices," she shouted.

Mitt Romney has a reputation for being somewhat stiff. But Lehrman is looking forward to his performance Thursday evening ? particularly given that the GOP nominee has been working with an oratory coach. "I see him being more impassioned and more natural," Lehrman says. "He's been able to fake naturalness better."

And in the process, perhaps, something valuable is lost. That's how Bensel sees it. By sculpting their conventions so carefully, he says, both political parties are missing out on the chance to make history.

"The problem is, when you script the speech, the crowd isn't involved and there's no feedback, there's no spontaneity," Bensel says. "The whole connection between the party rank and file as audience and whoever's speaking is broken. You are just an audience. You aren't a participant in the creation of a political moment."

Jennifer Garner Blogs About Her Work With 'Save The Children ...

In a new blog post for iVillage, Jennifer Garner shares why she?s so passionate about her work as an artist ambassador with the organization Save the Children.

?The Odd Life of Timothy Green? star shared why Save the Children focuses on early childhood education:

? The mothers I have visited in rural America live in cinder-block homes, or trailers without windows or space to put a playpen or lay their children on the floor and play with them. These families live in government-sponsored housing without a book or a picture or a crayon in sight. These parents are so isolated ? not always part of a loving community with friends to compare notes and vent to or watch and learn from, but all alone and far from family and often a little bit ashamed and embarrassed by their situations. When you have a little baby, or two or three, you need encouragement and support. These women are raising a baby in a vacuum. The families that Save the Children serves lack the physical tools of early education.

On the other hand, it is knowledge and support. It is crazy to go into a home with an 11 month old who doesn?t make a sound. No gurgles or coos. No screeches. Kids living in poverty, on average, have heard 30 million fewer words spoken to them by the time they are four years old. How is that? By not valuing children?s earliest years, our government sends a message to parents that children?s education doesn?t begin until kindergarten.?

Jennifer continues on the importance of the program and why it helps so much:

More than 60 percent of poor families don?t have books in their homes. It isn?t that kids should be reading by kindergarten, but they should know what a book is ? how to hold it, turn the pages, and how to sit still in anticipation of hearing a story.

And that?s why Save the Children?s Early Steps to School Success programs are so effective. Through home visits, book exchanges, parenting groups and more, Early Steps helps babies and toddlers with language, social and emotional development

Apple asks that eight Samsung devices be banned from US store shelves

Apple asks that eight Samsung devices be banned from store shelves

Favorable infringement findings in hand, we knew Apple would seek injunctions to ban Samsung devices from being sold in the US. And now we know that Tim Cook and company are following up on that billion dollar verdict and are seeking to enjoin eight handsets from being sold. As you can see in the chart above, the Galaxy S 4G, four Galaxy S II variants, the Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge, and Galaxy Prevail are all on the chopping block. Why is Apple only going after eight of the twenty-something devices found to be infringing its IP? Well, most of them are no longer being sold, and we all know how Judge Koh just hates having her time wasted.

The Key To Successful Real Estate Buying | Marathon Real Estate ...

Now?s the time to buy property, like the others, during this downturn in the American economy. This is a great market to buy into right now, as the rates are low and the required investment is small. The advice given throughout this article will help you find a solution for a price that is affordable and destined to be profitable.

When in the market to purchase a new home, always consider your long-term situation. While you might not have kids currently, for instance, it?s a good idea to check into the local schools near a potential house if you are planning to have children down the road.

TIP! A smart real estate agent will keep good contact with clients long after the sale, sending holiday cards and noting the anniversary of the home?s sale. Hearing again from you will let them remember of how you helped them when they were selling or buying.

Having five or more years of experience is something an appraiser should have if you?re going to hire one when you?re purchasing real estate. Hire an appraiser independent of any real estate office. Often times there will be conflicting interests. It is also important to ensure your appraiser is properly licensed and certified.

TIP! Look for parking areas near the home you are considering buying. This is of particular importance for any home you are considering that has no driveway.

It is important that you have a home inspection done before purchasing property. Although you?ll have to pay a fee, hire a professional home inspector to conduct the inspection so that you will have recourse if something gets missed in the inspection.

When you are looking to make a great investment on your real estate, you should consider doing some repair and remodel work. You?ll experience the benefit of a fast return on investment and increase in property value. Sometimes your property value will increase more than the money you put in.

TIP! If you can, stay away from buying property that is facing or backs into a busy road. You may be tempted to purchase these homes, but there is a reason that they are cheaper.

One simple way to start the entire real estate buying process is to get organized. You should have a notebook full of the information you get from newspapers, friends, online, and also from your agent. If you use this method, you will have all of your findings in one place if you need to refer to it.

Those who are wise and jump into this swirling market should follow the above article closely. It will help you avoid trouble and walk away with real estate that is under-priced and growing constantly in value. Earth supports less life than thought

The total mass of life on Earth may be one-third less than thought, altering how active we think life on our planet is, researchers say.

Past estimates of how much life there is on Earth suggested living organisms store about 1 trillion tons of carbon, of which about 30 percent dwells in single-celled microbes in the ocean floor, and about 55 percent rests in land plants.

However, it turns out previous estimates of the amount of life in the ocean floor were based on samples taken in very nutrient-rich areas, such as close to shore. About half the world's ocean is extremely nutrient-poor, meaning that comparably little in the way of life should be found there.

"For the last 10 years it was already suspected that sub-seafloor biomass was overestimated," said researcher Jens Kallmeyer, a geomicrobiologist at the University of Potsdam in Germany and the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences. "Unfortunately there were no data to prove it."

Over the course of six years, Kallmeyer and his colleagues analyzed data on counts of seafloor microbes and collected sediment samples from ocean sites far away from any coasts and islands. Their findings revealed there were up to 1 million times more cells in coastal sediments than in sediments from open-ocean areas ? known as the "deserts of the sea" due to their scarcity of nutrients.

"The huge variability of microbial abundance between sites has really struck me," Kallmeyer told LiveScience. "It was expected for several years now that there is greater variability than previously thought, but not to that huge extent."

All in all, the researchers estimate about 4 billion tons of carbon are stored in microbes in the ocean floor instead of 300 billion tons. This reduces the estimated amount of the world's biomass drastically by about a third. [ 50 Amazing Facts About Earth ]

Kallmeyer and his colleagues now want to consider the age of the sediments where microbes dwell as well, since different parts of the ocean may change and operate on very different time scales.

"For example, a cell in 2-meters (6-feet) depth in the South Pacific Gyre may reside in 20-million-year-old sediment, whereas the same age in a coastal sediment would be in over 100-meters (330 feet) depth," Kallmeyer said.

"There are huge differences in sedimentation rates, and they have to be taken into account." (Sedimentation rates, or the rate at which new sediments cover older ones, influences the age of layers at the seafloor surface.)

The scientists detailed their findings online Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Home Improvement? Yes, Succeed You Can! | Marijuana for MRSA

Design a renovation with an eye to creating built-in storage. For example, a broom closet can be reborn into a small pantry, or you can add floor-level shelving to a coat closest for shoes and bags. If you are renovating to sell a home, the benefit of the added storage can be the deciding factor in a buyer?s decision.

When it comes to home improvement, the lowest bidder for your project will not always translate to be the one who does the best work. Many times, a quote that is too good to be true is just that, due to poor work quality or hidden costs. Be sure to check with any agencies that provide feedback about contractors before hiring them.

Kitchen cabinets can be extremely heavy. Make them lighter by removing the doors and drawers from all of your new cabinets before installing them. The lighter cabinets will be easier to maneuver and there will be nothing to get in your way as you screw the cabinets to the wall.

For a temporary and inexpensive way to childproof the edges of fireplaces, tables, and other objects, try using foam pipe insulation sleeves, which are pre-slit sleeves of cushy styrofoam. You can cover the sleeves with tablecloths or throws to disguise the do-it-yourself bumpers until your child no longer needs them.

Interior paint finishes come in a number of textures. For ordinary homeowners there is no reason to select a texture rougher than ?eggshell? or ?orange peel.? In years gone by much rougher textures (like ?popcorn?) were used for walls and ceilings in order to provide visual interest and dampen sound. These textures proved easy to damage and hard to clean, and so fell out of common use.

To repair a larger hole in your walls, use sheet rock. First make the hole into an uniform square or rectangle by cutting away a measured area. Doing this will make the hole bigger, but will allow you to get exact dimensions for repair. Then cut a piece of sheet rock that is the same size as the square or rectangle you just cut from the wall. Place the newly cut piece of sheet rock in the hole and secure in place with drywall nails. Then apply joint compound to the seams. Cover the seams with joint tape, then apply another layer of joint compound and smooth it out. When dry, paint over it with any color.

Never agree to a discount from a contractor for not bothering with paperwork. Without a contract you are completely out of luck if the contractor doesn?t fulfill his obligations and do the work to the quality that you expected.

When you are designing your kitchen, think hard about whether you want an open or closed kitchen floor plan. If you like to be able to talk with your family, watch television and generally know what?s going on in the rest of the house while cooking, you may want an open kitchen plan. However, if you would prefer for the kitchen clutter to stay hidden, you may prefer a kitchen with a door that can be closed.

If you are lucky enough to have a deck on your home, then you probably do routine cleaning such as sweeping and general removal of outdoor debris. You should also do a deep cleaning of your deck surface at least once a year. Remove everything from your deck to give yourself plenty of room to work.

If you live in dry or fire-prone areas and are concerned about choosing the best fencing material for your home, consider red or white cedar fences. Cedar wood is well-loved for its durability and distinctive fragrance; it is also rated highly for safety in areas that are potentially threatened by wildfires.

Cover all surfaces appropriately before starting an improvement project. If you are tearing down walls or kitchen cupboards, cover any surfaces that have a finish that might get scratched, including floors and nearby walls. If you are painting, make sure to use a dropcloth on the floor and painter?s tape with paper coverings for features such as doorknobs and light switch face plates.

An extremely simple way to improve your home is to change out your air filters. Not only do allergens and dust creep into your air ducts when the filter is too clogged, but the efficiency of your system can be brought down by neglecting to change the filters. This is very important to do often if you have pets in the house.

If you are the proud owner of a home with a slate roof, a good thing to do is clean it regularly. Do what you can to keep it in good condition and it can last 75-200 years. It is not nicknamed ?the hundred year roof? for nothing.

Painting home improvement projects require dry days. This tip is critical for having success in painting your home. On wet and humid afternoons, paint dries more slowly on the walls, which means that you will be at your project longer. Only painting on the dry days will cut your time in between coats and speed up the project overall.

When doing a web search looking for a contractor to hire, do specific niche searches. Many contractors work in niche aspects of home improvement and can do an excellent job for you. These contractors have the experience and expertise that is required for many of the niche home improvement jobs.

It doesn?t matter if you?re trying to throw on some new wallpaper or pull up an old rug, your home improvements will not go as planned unless you?re properly prepared and knowledgeable about what you?re attempting to do. Be sure that you?re taking this information seriously and working to implement what you have read above.

Isaac Prompts Tropical Storm Watch for Tampa Area

The National Hurricane Center on Saturday morning issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Tampa, Fla., as a strengthened Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to pass close to the Tampa Bay area early next week before making landfall along the northern Gulf Coast.

More than 50,000 people are converging on Tampa for the Republican National Convention starting Monday. Vice President Joe Biden had planned to be in the area Monday to deliver a Democratic counter-message, but canceled the visit Friday night. The Obama-Biden campaign said the reason was "to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm" as well as the tens of thousands attending convention activities.

The Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach northward to Tarpon Springs, a northern suburb of Tampa. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions -- sustained winds between 39 and 73 miles per hour -- are possible within the specified area within 48 hours. Areas south of Bonita Beach, Fla., on the state's west coast are under a Hurricane Warning -- which indicates are greater confidence and more imminent threat of those conditions occurring in that region.

As of 11 a.m. Eastern time, Isaac was located in the Windward Passage between Hispaniola and Cuba. It was approximately 40 miles east of Guantanamo, Cuba, moving toward the northwest at 17 miles per hour.

The storm currently has maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour. After Isaac cross Cuba, it is expected to intensify and become a hurricane on Sunday over the Florida Straits before crossing over the Florida Keys and emerging into the Gulf of Mexico.

  • About 50 percent of dentists in the US are mercury-free. However, only an estimated 10 percent of those fully understand the health risks associated with dental amalgam. It?s crucial to understand these risks when removing amalgams, or you could risk acute toxicity from the mercury released during the removal process
  • Biological dentists, also known as holistic-, or environmental dentists, operate according to the belief system that your teeth are an integral part of your body and hence your overall health, and recognize that your oral and dental health can have a major influence on other disease processes in your body
  • Amalgam is a major source of environmental mercury pollution. Dental offices must be equipped with mercury separators to elimninate further mercury contamination of our environment
  • Resources for finding a qualified biological dentist are included. You're encouraged to ask questions of your dentist prior to enlisting his services, to make sure the office is truly adhering to holistic dental practices. A dozen questions are offered as a starting point

Obama's team to counter GOP message

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrats want to cause a stir -- or at least stay in the conversation -- while the spotlight is on Republicans next week at the GOP convention in Tampa, Florida.

President Barack Obama and his campaign are seeking to counter Mitt Romney's message and try head off any dramatic climb for the Republican challenger in post-convention polls, staging events around the nation next week.

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will campaign in four battleground states and Obama's campaign will hold events around the country aimed at attracting women voters. The "Romney-Ryan: Wrong for Women" events will start with the Women Vote 2012 Summit in Las Vegas on Saturday with appearances by White House advisers Valerie Jarrett and Cecilia Munoz and actress Natalie Portman and include similar gatherings aimed at women voters in seven cities next week.

In the Rust Belt, Obama's campaign is planning an economic-themed bus tour through Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin with former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. And in Tampa, Democrats plan daily events with party officials and middle-class Americans to counter the Republican ticket.

"Our goal is to cut through the political chatter and speak directly to Americans about the clear choice they face in this election between moving the country forward, and going back to the same failed policies of the past," said Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter.

Both campaigns view their party conventions as important periods to lay out the themes of the fall campaign and tell the story of their candidate to a national audience. The party along the sidelines often tries to hold events in the host city to grab attention and counter their opponent's message.

Obama's team notes that presidential challengers typically receive a bump in support from their party convention and expect Romney to benefit from the weeklong exposure. But by holding their convention in Charlotte, N.C., beginning Sept. 4, right on the heels of the Republican convention, Democrats contend they can quickly rebut Romney's message.

Obama will travel to college towns in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia next week, courting young voters and college students while Biden will travel to the Tampa area on Monday -- putting him in the city on the opening day of the GOP convention. On Tuesday, the vice president makes stops in St. Augustine, Fla., and Orlando, appearing with actress Eva Longoria.

First lady Michelle Obama will appear on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" on Wednesday during the heart of the GOP convention and make other appearances during the week.

"With just 75 days left, we're not going to cede four days of this campaign just because of a party convention," Cutter said.

In years past, the party's nominee would typically take time off during their opponent's nominating convention but given the competitive race, both campaigns are expected to court voters throughout the conventions. Romney's campaign said they expected the former Massachusetts governor to hold events during the Democratic party's convention.

Phil Singer, who helped coordinate Democrats' message during the 2004 Republican convention, said it's always difficult to "crash the other side's party" because the convention carries with it a captive media audience, primetime programming and tens of millions of dollars behind the high-profile speeches.

But Singer said "in a media environment that's on steroids as this one is, any time you're not feeding the shark, the shark is feeding on you."
