Dell is launching a wave of new Latitude laptops and OptiPlex desktops for business users today. They include a laptop that can reach up to 32.7 hours of battery life (with an extra battery pack), getting well past the day-long limit that has held back laptops for years.
That raises the likelihood that you?ll be able to use it for a bunch of sessions and may forget to charge it altogether when the battery gets low. Still, that?s a better problem to have than a laptop that lasts for maybe a few hours.
The new laptops (pictured at top) use Intel?s latest line of Core microprocessors, based on the Ivy Bridge chip design. They also include features such as better manageability (with the latest Intel vPro systems management technology) and data security measures. Sam Burd, vice president of PC Products at Dell, says you can use them in the boardroom, classroom, hospital, or on the battlefield. Er, I?d like to see the latter.
The laptops include a StrikeZone shock absorber, or fast-response free-fall sensor. It isolates a hard drive when you drop the laptop to prevent data loss. The battery gets up to 32.7 hours with an optional 9-cell battery and battery slice. The laptop can recover 80 percent of its charge in an hour of charging.
The OptiPlex desktop family includes a variety of new models, including the OptiPlex 9010 All-in-One desktop, where the computer and monitor are combined in a single case. Dell is also introducing its new entry-level Dell Precision T1650 workstation PC. Pricing and availability will be released in the coming weeks.
